(Weather report) How To Use A Telescope For Research

 Would you like to do scientific research with your telescope? Do you have a preconception that to do serious research with telescopes needs an astrophysics degree and a telescope costing millions of dollars? Not so, even with a small hobby telescope you too can do great research with your home telescope.

Galileo used a telescope which is much inferior to todays telescopes, even the telescopes your can buy for your home. Galileo saw Saturn with ears, whereas most of the telescopes available today for the home can see Saturn in greater detail. You too can participate in scientific research in the comfort of your own home, and without an astrophysics degree!

* Astronomy Research - The Moon
I love the Moon, especially when looking with a telescope. The Moon is so close to use that the Moon offers us much ability to research. We could research the luminosity of the Moon over the periods of a month, and scale everyday on a chart of maybe 1 to 10 the luminosity.

A bit trickier, would be to measure the Moons distance from us, and is fully possible even with a telescope for the home. You could make drawings of the Moons craters and check up on a map of the Moon to find out what the name of the crater is. You could take a look and find how fast the Moon really moves, by making points in the sky and measuring how long it takes the Moon to travel that arc.

* Astronomy Research - Saturn
Saturn also offers us much research, even for amateur astronomers. You can see the planet over time coming closer and going further. You can see the belt in different positions, you can view different detail, and make drawings. You can look at the moons and find there positions, and figure when they are in eclipse, in relation to you.

* Astronomy Research - Jupiter
Again with Jupiter, we can do similar research as with Saturn. You can look at that giant swirling cloud on Jupiter and use it as an indicator. Then you can find out how long it takes for the planet to revolve. Also you can observe the tilt of the planet which could easily swallow up the Earth many times over. Jupiter has many moons, so Jupiter makes a great point for research as you can see the moons around Jupiter and in different angles at different times.

* Astronomy Research - The Sun
Viewing the Sun with a telescope must NOT be done directly, as the Sun is so powerful in an instant it could render vision useless. The Sun can be viewed indirectly, however, by projecting the Suns image onto a white card or if your telescope is in your house, one way that I have used successfully is to project the Sun to the ceiling. Note it will take time to find the Sun as you can not use any of the lenses to source it into view. It is far too risky and please heed this warning.

When you project the Sun, you can find great detail such as Solar flares on occasion, Sunspots regularly. Over several days and months can see the Sun is an active and living star with constant activity.

* Astronomy Research Without A Telescope
For many years, I did not have telescope, so I was only able to do astronomy research without a telescope. All is not lost and can be great fun. You can monitor Pleiades, the Orion constellation and many other constellations in the sky, depending where you are and what time of the year it is. This serves to prove a great piece of knowledge for when you buy a telescope, as you can navigate the heavens much more easily. The Moon also offers great research without a telescope, as you can see the phases of the Moon, and still measure color, and luminosity.

Amateur astronomy research is fully possible, even with a small telescope. You can make great discoveries, and though they may not make impacts on science, it is fully possible to make a more fun and meaningful hobby. When you add to this a good and disciplined research method of cataloging your findings, you will amass a great amount of personal knowledge on the objects in the heavens. You also may be able to find the next Halleys Comet!

Computer Simulation of the Human (weather) Brain

 Researchers have recently constructed a new computer model of the cortex of the human brain. This model is similar in principle to the more well known Blue Brain computer model, but it simulates a much larger area of the brain. It actually less detailed at the neuron level when compared to Blue Brain. The Blue Brain project has already simulated a section of the rat’s brain that is named the neocortex. The Blue Brain computer simulation has successfully modeled approximately 10,000 neurons including near 30 million synapses.

This other computer simulation, however, has successfully modeled about a trillion neurons and almost a quadrillion synapses. This specific computer model is able to model the entire thalamo-cortical system of a mammillian brain. Apparently, the researchers have made of simulation of this brain region because is is involved in creating concious awareness.

An interesting thing that the scientsts have noted from this computer model is that they witnessed the recreation of larger-scale oscillatory activity (i.e. brain waves). They merely emerged as a function of the computer model and were not programmed into it. This basically means that this computer simulation actually was ble to replicate the way a regular brain would look like on an EEG readout. This is an indication that this method of simulating the brain is actually working as it should.

This computer simulation of the human brain will allow scientists to carry out a variety of different experiments that are not currently possible to do. It will enable researchers to gain a much better insight into the workings of the brain. Things that are normally very hard to do on brain wetware may easily be done on the computer model. Researchers will have much more leeway in carrying out different experiments on this virtual brain. The computer model will allow scientists to carry out experiments that are impossible from a physical or ethical standpoint.

This computer model will enable the simulation of almost any type of brain disorder. This is a very exciting possiblity that could help a tremendous amount of people. Researchers intend to investigate disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other psychiatric disorders. The scientists also intend to investigate the effects of pharmaceutical drugs on this computer brain model. This may lead to faster FDA approval for brain drugs.

The researchers also want to learn more about consciousness and how it is constructed. I have serious doubts as to whether the computer model will actually be able to model consciousness. However, this new computer model will likely give scientists a much greater understanding of how the human brain functions. Overall, the research is extremely interesting and it has quite a few potential benefits in advancing our knowledge of the brain.

 Although James Allen’s book, “As a Man Thinketh” is probably the first classic on the topic of changing your thoughts to change your life, it really is a hard read. There’s not really any practical advice in it to show you how to get what you want out of life.

On the other hand, “The Science of Getting Rich” is full of gems to help you understand how to achieve the life you want. When you understand these principles, you will take the right kind of action to achieve your dreams.

1. Getting rich is the result of following certain principles, nothing more.

Did you ever notice how the universe works on certain scientific principles? We can depend on the laws of physics. They work the same way every time. The principles behind getting rich and achieving the life you want work on certain scientific principles too.

These include knowing what you want (your dream), believing you can achieve your dream and then taking the appropriate actions to reach your dream.

2. God wants you to have abundance, not poverty.

I grew up in the Baptist church. Lots of hell fire and brimstone there. The problem is that those teachings are for non believers. Once you get saved, they no longer apply. If you think you have die first to be happy, then you need to read the Bible because that definitely isn’t what it says.

When God created Adam and Eve, He put them in a beautiful garden. Everything was perfect. There was plenty of everything. Adam and Eve were going to live forever, and they would enjoy a face to face relationship with God. That hardly sounds like a god who wants you to be miserable.

3. There is more than enough for everyone.

There weren’t as many people around when Wallace Wattles lived, but one thing hasn’t changed: there’s more than enough resources on Earth to support everyone. In fact, the Earth has the capacity to support around 50 - 60 billion people. Even if you add up all of the people who have ever lived, that’s only a fraction of what the Earth can support.

That’s why it’s not necessary to compete with others to achieve what you want.

4. To achieve abundance, you must satisfy the mind, body, and soul.

Have you ever noticed how Hollywood stars seem to have everything, but they’re miserable? In fact, a lot of people who have a lot of money are miserable. Have you ever wondered why?

It’s because their lives are out of balance. Money will only satisfy the physical needs. It won’t satisfy all of our other needs: health, relationships, the need to be loved. When you acquire monetary wealth, as well as enrich all of the other areas of your life, you will be happy. Understand that money is a tool to help achieve what you want in life. It isn’t something to be worshipped or acquired to make us feel better about ourselves.

5. Success in life is becoming what you want to be.

This is the ultimate success. When you have the career you want, the type of relationships you want, the bank account you want, you are achieving in the physical what you want to be. Success in life is far more though. It’s a satisfaction of knowing you have achieved your full potential.

Let me caution you though, don’t wait until you have achieved everything you want before you allow yourself to enjoy your life. Enjoy it now. Most of the things we want in life we probably already have and just take for granted.

Ultimately, having the life you want is about hope. As Wallace Wattles says, “The world is not going to the devil; it is going to God. It is wonderful Becoming.”

It’s all about going for it, having the faith to believe and then the willingness to do what it takes to make our dreams become real.

Is It Possible To Catch On Fire Due To Spontaneous Combustion

 We always figure that if we safeguard our homes and do our best to be careful we will not likely have a fire to burn us up. We can go to great lengths to install smoke detectors and security systems that will alert us if there is smoke or flames anywhere in the house day or night. We can keep fire extinguishers on hand and use special care when we use our kitchens and in the way we heat our homes. What if you are still not safe from burning up even after you have taken all of these necessary precautions?

It seems that could be the case when it comes to a strange scientific mystery called human combustion. It is a rare phenomenon and is believed by some to have taken place with certain individuals. One minute they are lying in their beds or sitting in a chair and suddenly they simply explode and burst into flames. The flames are said to be so intense that it can char a human body in a half an hour or less.

There have been many mysterious cases of this type of human burning reported since the 1700’s. People have been found to have been burned to the point that their torso had nothing but ashes left, but sometimes there were small or large fragments of their lower or upper extremities that remained. In some cases they had portions of their skulls to remain. When these bodies were discovered, it was puzzling as to how the fire started and why the body and whatever apparatus it was resting on, a bed or chair, was burned so severely and not much else in the room affected.

The cases that prompted the internal combustion theory have had several possible causes although none of them have been entirely proven to be the specific cause. Some think that there had to be an external cause such as an abundance of secreted body fat on the outside of the body or clothes that was ignited by one thing or another. Another theory is that static electricity could perhaps cause the sudden burst into flames. Some explanations thought by some are that there are certain elements in the body such as oxygen, hydrogen, or perhaps potassium that somehow intermingle and cause this bizarre occurrence.

There have even been some cases where people have begun burning and survived. While some offer a plausible explanation as to the cause, some believe these really were examples of spontaneous combustion that did not end in fatality. We might not have ever considered just sitting around and blowing up for no reason a possibility, but evidently there could be some cause for concern.
